Favourite tipples (not available at the Muirs Inn, Kinross): Pale Armadillo, Ossian, Loweswater Gold, Sheep Beer (funny that) and Selma by local, Blunt Chisel Brewery. Malt whisky.

If you want to buy him music, he is currently partial to Dry Cleaning, Jetstream Pony, Hannah Holland, Jon Hopkins and various forms of Berlin industrial drum and bass which is a constant embarrassment to his children.

If it’s books, try any Scottish fiction, historical stuff and maybe socio-political. Nietzsche and Kierkegaard go down pretty well, too.

If you want to talk football, best mention East Fife FC at least once. Rest of the sporting focus should be Shinty.

Don’t mention DIY, reality TV or celebrity gossip but you’ll be ok with current affairs, ship recovery programmes, bar games (especially TV series Indoor League), caravans and most of the above (except the first part of this sentence).
